Cincinnati Childrens Project ECHO Programs

Project ECHO (Extension for Community Care Outcomes) delivers best-practice training in specialized medical treatments to pediatric providers through video conferencing technology. By incorporating a brief, high-yield didactic of practical information illustrating evidence-based guidelines, paired with community-sourced cases utilized for deep-dive discussions. The sessions are respectful of time, and protects your time to learn.  The Mental and Behavioral Health courses are led by a specialty hub team of pediatricians, psychiatrists, and psychologists.  They boil down the “what” to do about childhood mental health concerns  and guide you through the “how”.

ACT Early

Act Early ECHO provides information on and resources about current and emerging knowledge and evidence-based promising practices about the four phases of early identification: family-engaged developmental monitoring, developmental screening, referrals for needed supports and services, and receipt of needed services.


ANXIETY

Anxiety is common in children and adolescents presenting to pediatric primary care settings; however, identification and treatment can be complex. Our Anxiety ECHO provides an efficient and collaborative way to learn and practice evidence based interventions. The learning is supported by a psychologist, psychiatrist, and primary care provider peers. The goal of ECHO is to improve primary care providers’ comfort with identification and management of treatment of anxiety in the primary care setting, while also providing a network of resources to ensure patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time.

DEPRESSION

Depression is common in children and adolescents; however, identification and treatment can be complex. Our Depression ECHO provides an efficient way to learn and practice, supported by psychiatry, psychology and primary care provider peers. The goal is to improve the primary care provider’s comfort when managing treatment of depression and provide a network of resources to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.


Early Diagnosis and Interventions for CP

Cerebral palsy (CP) can be detected as young as three months corrected age. Evidence shows that early diagnosis and early interventions are imperative to optimize development for young children with cerebral palsy. This ECHO will address informal and formal assessment tools that can be used for early detection of CP and evidence-based treatments for young children with CP. Participants will be able to connect with one another to discuss how to improve developmental outcomes for young children with CP and their families. 

Focused Intermediate topics in Therapy

Participants in this focused, intermediate topics course will learn how to apply exposure techniques to improve client outcomes. This course is designed for therapists with a strong foundation in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health concerns for children and adolescents, and exposure therapy is one of the most effective evidence-based approaches for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
*Learner participation is key: All participants in this ECHO are required to submit a clinical case related to this topic as part of this course. Case submissions are reviewed by the HUB team and learners will be notified in advance about presenting their case during a learning session.*

Mental and behavioral health concerns are common in children and adolescents presenting to therapists in community agencies and schools; however, identification and treatment can be complex and time with families is limited. Our Therapist ECHO series provides an efficient and collaborative way to learn and practice evidence-based interventions. The learning is supported by psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists.


Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) - scope

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) occurs when infants are born to women who used substances, including opioids, during pregnancy, resulting in medical and long-term developmental complications. Supporting Children of the OPioid Epidemic (SCOPE) ECHO provides an efficient way for participants to learn and practice, by offering support and guidance from interdisciplinary experts in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, medicine, nursing, speech-language pathology, etc. SCOPE ECHO also includes the voice of caregivers with lived experiences caring for young children who have experienced prenatal substance exposure and/or trauma exposure

Apply what you learned in the Anxiety and Depression courses and continue to expand the “how” of pediatric medical management of mental health problems.   Best Practices for common mental health scenarios encountered in primary care will be covered along with ongoing practice coaching by child and adolescent psychiatrists and child psychologists.   Each of sessions represents a theme, and includes relevant psychopharmacology, office interventions, and communication strategies that amplify basic knowledge to a new practice confidence level.

There are over 100,000 children and adults living with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the US, yet most of these individuals have limited access to knowledgeable providers comfortable with managing the complex medical and psychosocial complications of SCD. The goal of Sickle Treatment and Outcomes Research in the Midwest (STORM) TeleECHO is to empower primary care providers to develop the skills and knowledge to manage pediatric and adult patients with sickle cell disease using evidence-based best practices. The STORM TeleECHO presentation curriculum is based on the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s evidence-based guidelines for the management of SCD.

The impact of trauma on pediatric mental, behavioral and physical health are alarming and compounded by the stressors related to the COVID19 pandemic. In response to this concerning trend our Trauma ECHO will focus on the importance of effectively identifying trauma and connecting patients to evidence based treatment.
